West Nautical are very proud to be the main sponsor of Moscow based ice hockey team “West”.

It may seem that a yacht business and ice hockey are two diametrically opposite things. However, as the CEO and key player Andrey Lomakin explains;

“It is an uncompromising struggle to lead, the desire for team spirit and the drive for results that unifies West Nautical; and in these aspects, there is a bond with ice hockey where the same values are needed for success on the ice”

Ice hockey team West was established in 2006. The first official training of the team, which was originally called “Burevestnik”, took place on 27th September and was organised by “Katok.ru”. At first, the key idea was to unite like-minded people, who were all non-professional hockey players, to conduct friendly and non-competitive matches amongst clubs of a similar level.

With time, the team began to improve their skills and in 2008, several experienced players with professional backgrounds joined the team, and the standard of the team has continued to grow. In June 2008, Igor Esmantovich, a very skilled trainer who was experienced with training the Russian Men’s National Ice Hockey, become the team’s coach. Under his leadership, the team developed their own style, and the interaction and cooperation between players has dramatically increased, with comments from fans noting how players display a strong spirit and winning mindset.

The Moscow Hockey Championship of 2008/2009 became the first big competition for HC “Burevestnik”, who in their next season started to really improve their performances and they finished the season by achieving bronze medals in the division ‘Leader’. It was that 2009/2010 season then then paved a way to the most successful period for the club, with the team achieving a gold medal double in the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 consecutive seasons. During these two seasons, the team also won the UMHL Cup twice.

At the beginning of the 2014-2015 season, the team replaced their name with HC “West”, and continued to keep up their victorious traditions, strong spirit and winning mindset in each tournament and each game.

The 2014-2015 season turned out to be quite hard for the team, where competitions were held in two stages and there was a combined championship and group tournament. The team continued to show their fierce competitive nature and the ability to play on the edge throughout the season. A key player throughout was the highly experienced Mikhail Milekhin, who managed to score the goals during the crucial parts of the season. In the center of the ice, paying close attention to competitors, were the super trio Lyakishev, Smirnov, and West Nautical’s very own Kirill Shabalov, the Managing Director of Sunseeker Russia.

The team finished the 2014-2015 season with a very well deserved third place in the United Moscow Hockey League.

We congratulate West on their successful season, especially our West Nautical colleagues, and we wish them all the best in the 2015-2016 season.
